This town became known as Pegtown because all the houses were built on pegs. Quite often people called it Pigtown. Therefore Pegtown became known as Pigtown.
Pegtown, because of the name and nick name Pigtown was not a very popular place to live, therefore not a town of growth. The government refused to place a Post Office there because of the town's lack of growth and unpopularity.
A town meeting was held to discuss means of resolving these issues. This meeting was attended by William Buchanan III, son-in-law of Richard Wheatley. William suggested changing the town's name to Wheatley, named after his father-in-law, Richard Wheatley, the first settler.
William's suggestion was approved by the town's people present at that meeting. Futhermore, William was asked by the town's people to apply to the government for approval of the name change and a Post Office.
William Buchanan III did apply and as a result the town became known as the Town Of Wheatley, and a Post Office was granted. Moreover, William Buchanan III became the first Post Master.
It is dated that William Buchanan III was Post Master from January 1, 1865 to December 1868. Therefore the government gave the approval possibly December 1864.
