I am the Great-great-great-great-grandson of Capt. William Buchanan (1774-1813) in whom I've taken a great interest and am working on a short history of his role in the War of 1812. My relationship comes from William's son, William Buchanan (1807-1875), his daughter Mary Buchanan (1838-1863), her daughter Margaret Taylor (1856-1925), her daughter Anna Noble (1880-1956), and her daughter Grace Johnson (1914-2003) who was my mother. I am deeply appreciative of the loving work that has been completed to date regarding Capt. Buchanan and I look forward to the future evolution of this site.

I am working towards publishing his story in an historical-novel type format. I have found hundreds of pages of information, including a list of the men who served under him during the war and their pay rates. He led his company at the Battles of Frenchtown, Detroit and Fort Meigs and died just after the defeat of the British fleet on Lake Erie but before the subsequent American invasion of Upper Canada and the death of Tecumseh.

Over nine years since my last post so please excuse my really late post. I've moved three times and chased multiple lines on my family history over the years. I'm currently updating my Scottish roots of Buchanan on my Father's side and Calhoun on my Mother's. I ordered your book today. Again, please excuse the delay. I look forward to reading your story. -- Mike

Thank you for posting the information. Its been very interesting learning about my Canadian ancestry. My Buchanan family history is through Janette Buchanan (1839-1924), the granddaughter of Captain William Buchanan (1774-1813). She married David Taylor in 1862 then immigrated to Arkansas in 1878.

I too am descended from Capt. William Buchanan. Theresa Vera Buchanan (Maycock) was my Great Grandmother. Her daughter Cora Maycock Taylor was my maternal grandmother. I see you don't have her listed and instead have a Margery which happens to be my mother's name. Theresa didn't have a daughter Margery. I can provide some info on this line if you send me an email. Thanks for a great site.

Not sure where I fit in here but just recently was made aware that I'm the 7th generation of Hutchins beginning with a Loyalist ancestor who came from Dorset, Dorchester, England. There is some information on this website of an Amy Tamar Dennis...she married a Hutchins who is an ancestor of mine. My grandmother was Muriel Hazel Craig [nee: Hutchins]. Her father was Colin Hutchins...the family was originally settled in Grandview, Manitoba but when my great-grandfather re-married he took his youngest 4 children & moved to Ontario settling in Colchester. It was there he resided until his death...I am the last of the Craig line & the youngest grandchild of Muriel Hutchins (deceased August 8th, 2001; Leamington, Ontario) who was married to William Wallace Craig. If anyone has any information or would like to know something about me, my cousins & our children [the 7th & 8th generations] I'd be happy to oblige...

I'm very pleased to announce that my book. "The Diary of Captain William Buchanan", was published on Remembrance Day and is my tribute to this man who perished in the War of 1812. It is a work of historical fiction, but based on more than a year's research into his life. It is only available in e-book format but that saves trees and keeps the price to a minimum. Check for it on Amazon.ca if anyone is interested. I was.very proud to have brought William to life during the 200th anniversary of his death.

Lisa, I'm not sure if your offer was directed at me or to anyone at large with additional information about William Buchanan (1774-1813). Regardless, I would like to offer what I think is the most surprising bit of information that I discovered in my research. I learned that two of his brothers also immigrated from Scotland in 1804 to the nearby Baldoon Settlement established by Lord Selkirk. In fact, one of William's nephew's, who was only ten at the time, perished during the voyage across the Atlantic. When the Baldoon effort went bust, one of the two brothers, Gordon, moved to Essex Co. and established a home there. He got married to an American woman in 1810 and served in the same regiment as his older brother. In fact, Gordon was Sergeant-Major of the regiment at the start of the war but was discharged when his wife became pregnant in the fall of 1812. In my book, I added a number of appendices detailing many of the facts I learned about William and Elizabeth, their immediate family and even their neighbours. I hope the webmaster will forgive this small promo, but for less that $5 cdn on "amazon.ca", you can download and read the whole thing. Printed, it would have been about 240 pages. BTW, I am retired and, while I treat my writing with professional care, I am not a professional writer. I'm just someone who has found a wonderful way to spend my golden years.

You're very welcome and please, there is no need to apologize for a busy life. We've all gone through those sorts of periods. You mentioned in your original note that you'd like to share info. I don't know what we might have between us that is unknown by the other but please write me "[email protected]" and perhaps we can work out an exchange. BTW, I found a digitized copy of Capt. Buchanan's signature in the National Archives and reproduced it in my book. It was incredible to see his actual penmanship (which was strong and elegant).

Hi Lisa Murphy. I'm the great-grand-daughter of Collin Hutchins & Luella Reives. In fact I bare a resemblance to Luella who passed away. Collin took a 2nd wife Gudrun Hutchins. I'm descended from 3 William Hutchins. I've only become aware of this through a book on the William Hutchins line which was authored & published in July/1998 by Alice Gray Williston. She is formerly a Hutchins of the American line who settled in Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA. I have a copy of the book on Skydrive as there were only 100 reserve copies put into print in 1998 & sold to family members. I received the book on loan from a local geneological society through a friend. Then it turns out a woman named Linda Iller...she was the 2nd wife of a Hutchins, the book is from her former husbands personal library. I could forward it. I also have some links to some other useful information...but not much. I'm a total newbie in this...was only interested in my father's parents & grandparents. Most of my family is deceased or removed. I was never told anything about my history & no one ever spoke of anything. My family through Muriel Craig [nee: Hutchins] was never close to me so I was never in the family loop & did not receive the stories, history or heirlooms that my other cousins & Aunts/Uncles did. I can forward what I have through email...I'm available at [email protected]

Hi Mr. Frank Sexton: I'm curious where you live...are you in Ontario? You would be in my bloodlines according to the Hutchins family book I read. I recognize the name of some of your ancestors. I have watched a DVD on the war of 1812 & the significance of Amherstburg, Ontario in this...I live in Leamington, Ontario which is part of Essex County. Alot of the Hutchins line settled here in 1800. I'm a descendent of William Hutchins who came from Dorset, Dorchester, England to Grandview, Manitoba, Canada in 1748. There's alot of war of 1812 history here in Essex County. My mom's friends' husband is big on that. I don't know much except for what I watched in dvd format which was created by a local historian with an american wife. I'd certainly be interested in learning more from you...you sound very adept at following this type of family stuff. I guess my English ancestor would be my 5th great-grandfather & he died during the black plague which swept Europe in the late 1400's. I found a link to some records from the church in Dorset which lists a bunch of people from that congregation...dates of death & marriages.

I'm living in Ottawa now, but I grew up in SWOntario (Chatham to be precise) and had a large number of relatives on my mother's side scattered from Windsor to Brantford. Many of them were farmers. Sadly, I no longer have any living blood-ancestors, the last one having passed away in 2009. And neither do I have any children for whom this information would have been of interest. Regardless, having published something about the lives of William and Elizabeth helps push those two incredible human beings further towards an actual place in history rather than being somewhat lost behind Brock and Tecumseh (both of whom William would have known and even fought beside). It is also something that all their other descendants can now read and learn about them.

Michael, thanks for you kind comments. I'd like to share another thing I've found doing research on ancestors. Not only must you be vigilant for those little gems that surprise you along the way (such as two of William's brothers joining him in Upper Canada), but you also have to be prepared to find things that sadden or embarrass. It appears that one of Elizabeth's sisters had a child at the age of 12 while still unmarried. The father eventually did marry Elizabeth's sister when the sister turned 14 (which was not an unreasonable age for marriage 200 years ago). The laws of chance suggest that if one goes back far enough, one will find some sort of event for which there is a certain sense of embarrassment in everyone's tree. But facts are facts and when put together are just part of our heritage.for which we should be proud.

I am very interested in any additional information you have on the Souliere family. My g-g-grandmother was Jane Souliere, b. 1830, probably in Garden River or Sault St, Marie, ONT, d/o Antoine B. Souliere and Marie Louise or Louisa Schellin. Its interesting to see that the Souliere family arrived in Quebec city sometime before 1671 and lived on L'Ile d'Orleans because my Fortier ancestors arrived in Quebec in 1663 and were settled on L'Ile d'Orleans by 1670 or there abouts. I wonder if they knew each other? Anyway, I'm writing to see if you have any information indicating which of the male Soulieres first entered the NWC (fur trade, and later the HBC after the merger in 1821) and married a Native or mixed-blood woman? I have seen records of our Soulieres on Madeline Island (LaPointe, WI) as early as the late 1700s. It appears that Jean Baptiste Souliere II 1826-1899 and his wife Angelique Bousquet lived there but then migrated back east and settled on Drummond Island near Makinac island Michigan. When the border was finally settled after the war of 1812 the family shows up on a list of Drummond Island "Indians and halfbreeds" that moved north across the new border and settled in Garden River. Jean Baptiste's son Antoine Benjamin Souliere was born on Drummond Island, but records indicate he moved further northwest along the north shore of Lake Superior and settled at Michipicoton, then an important HBC Post for the Southern Dept. That is where his daughter Jane met and later married my g-g-grandfather Nick Finlayson, another mixed-blood with strong ties to the fur trade through his grandfather, Scottish HBC Chief Trader/Factor Nicol Finlayson 1794-1877. Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out which of the Soulier men first married either a Native woman or a mixed-blood daughter of the Fur Trade. Thanks.

Been doing some intensive searching on my tree with some interesting results. My dad's side is Couvillon, my mom's side is Lesperance (both my great great grandparents). One of my aunts on Couvillon side recently was told by an indigenous organization that we have Metis heritage. I've been trying to find out more info for myself on our ancestors, but Ancestry.ca becomes blurred from poorly processed documents and wrong spelling from census takers. Did you happen to find out more about any indigenous heritage we my have?
